The Dangers of a Critical Spirit

Definition of a Critical Attitude: Our negative thinking that relates to people; dwelling upon the perceived faults of another with no view to their good.

I. The Effects of Criticism (Numbers 12:1-6)

  1. Criticism sets us against our brother or sister. (12:1-3)
  2. Criticism ruins our fellowship with God. (12:4-9)
  3. Criticism brings about negative consequences to our lives. (12:10-15)
  4. Criticism can effect the progress of others. (12:15-16)

Four significant issues hidden under the cover of Criticism (James 4:11-12)

  1. One who is critical of others may be envious of others. (Number 12:1-3)
  2. One who is critical of others tends to be prideful towards others. (Romans 12:16)
  3. One who is critical of others tends to practice the same thing they criticize others about. (Romans 2:1-3, Matthew 7:1-5)
  4. One who is critical of others is walking in sin towards God and the person they are being critical of. (Numbers 12:1-11)

When we are being criticized we should: (Romans 12:14)

  1. Pray for the one who is criticizing you. (Numbers 12:1-14)
  2. Speak kindly to the one who is criticizing you. (1 Peter 3:9)
  3. Do good to the one who is criticizing you. (Romans 12:17-21)
  4. Not quarrel but gently correct those who may oppose you if appropriate. (2 Timothy 2:24-26)

If we are being critical of others we should: (1 Peter 3:10-12)

  1. Identify the reasons we have a critical spirit towards the person. (1 Corinthians 11:31)
  2. Identify areas of our lives where we are practicing the same things we are being critical about. (Matthew 7:1-5)
  3. Confess and repent of our critical spirit towards that person. (Proverbs 28:13-14)
  4. Replace our critical spirit with a spirit or praise and encouragement. (Romans 12:14)

Key Point: A continually critical attitude toward those around me will consume all that is healthy and joy-producing in my life.
