Healthy, growing relationships are in great part dependent upon love-filled language. The instrument of language is the tongue, a small thing compared to the body, but nevertheless quite powerful.
Scripture compares the power of the tongue to a small bit that goes into the mouth of a horse, and by its proper use a rider controls the whole horse. Or consider a ship’s rudder ‒ by this small device a pilot can control the direction of a very large ship. Both examples have a means of control, either rider or pilot.
However other little things can get “out of control” with devastating results: for example, a very tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire. Contrast that devastation to an “out of control” tongue, it too being a flame of fire that can set your whole life on fire.
Scripture further describes the tongue in ultimate terms of contradiction: “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.” In essence, death and life are in the power of the tongue. Through the same person, relationships can be built-up, stained, or even destroyed. It’s enough to make your head spin!
Must it be this way? The key which unlocks the answer is found in Proverbs 4:23, "Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life."
